Still Skiing But Snowtubing Closed in Prep of Golf

Just like that winter ended and the snowtubing park closed for the season. Now, we want golf to begin and that is scheduled for the first week of April. Until then, there is still plenty of skiing in the Poconos at Shawnee and Camelback Mountain Resort. In fact, Camelback is hosting the carboard box derby and pond skimming competitions this weekend. Really fun and funny. It is not too late to enter. There are lots of spring golf specials in the Poconos. You can find Fernwood’s Spring Golf Discount Coupon here. Also, this weekend the World Tavern Poker Championships are hosted in Fernwood’s Astor Room. The event is open to all players if you want to try your hand at poker.

Why Visit The Poconos?

Today’s question came to mind as I was driving into work this morning. I live up on the Pocono Plateau (the mountain as it is generally referred to). The Fernwood Hotel & Resort is about a 35 minute drive and around 25 miles away from my house. It is also off the mountain and the air temperature is always a couple of degrees warmer then on the mountain.

Poconos - October Snow
1st snowfall of the season in the Poconos

What does this mean – those couple of degrees and the change in elevation can mean the difference between a hot day near the resort and a cooler more comfortable one up at the house. As evidenced by last weeks earliest snow on record for our area the hotel ended up with just enough snow to cover the grass while at home we had between 4 to 6 inches of accumulation. Remember that we’re only talking about a 25 mile distance and as the crow flies that’s more like 18 to 20 miles.

Poconos - Fall Foliage Blanket of Colors
Fall foliage colors in the Poconos

Fall is the best example of why you should take a visit to the Poconos. As you drive from one section to another, up one hill and down the other side and all within a one hour range you can see the widest array of colors imaginable. All shades of yellows, reds, pinks, browns and greens mixed on a palette with a background of blues and whites. One only has to look out and see these spectacular colors covering the earth like a hand quilted comforter.

Why Visit The Poconos? It’s not as though we have a lock on the fall foliage – not by a long shot, you can go anywhere to see the changing fall colors. What the Pocono area does have though is all the fun stuff to go along with the explosion of colors. Horseback riding, a round or two of golf, haunted Halloween houses, outlet shopping, go carts, corn maizes, outdoor farmers markets, flea markets and well you get the idea.

Think about it – but not too long the colors will only be around for a couple of weeks and before you know it the snow will be falling in earnest – then we can talk about that winter escape…
